Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Bara tala mobile application and related services ("Service"), provided by Bara tala ehf. ("we", "us", or "our"). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, you may not use the Service.

 

1. Description of the Service

Bara tala is an educational language-learning application designed to help users learn Icelandic, primarily within the workplace. Access to the Service is provided through organizations such as companies, unions, municipalities, or schools ("Organizations"). Users do not make payments directly to us. Access is granted through an Organization's subscription.

 

2. Eligibility

You may use the Service only if:

  • Your Organization has provided you with access; and
  • You are legally permitted to use the Service under applicable law.

The Service is designed for adults in the job market, although Organizations may also grant access to students in educational settings.

 

3. Your Account

Your account is created or enabled by your Organization. You are responsible for:

  • Keeping your login information secure
  • Using the Service in accordance with these Terms
  • Not sharing your login with others

We may suspend or terminate your access if we detect misuse, unauthorized access, or violation of these Terms.

 

4. Relationship With Your Organization

If your access is provided by an Organization:

  • The Organization may have access to limited information about your learning activity, such as your progress, challenge participation, or activity timestamps. This access is intended solely for training, reporting, and support purposes.
  • Your Organization, not you, is responsible for the purchase and management of licenses.
  • This aligns with our Privacy Policy, which explains how personal data is handled and who may view it. See our Privacy Policy for details.

 

5. Privacy Policy

Your use of the Service is also governed by our Privacy Policy, available at https://www.baratala.is/is/privacy. The Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your information — including account data, usage data, and pronunciation processing (handled via temporary voice-to-text transcription for learning purposes only).

 

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for unlawful purposes
  • Attempt to disrupt or interfere with the Service
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or modify any part of the Service
  • Use the Service to transmit harmful or unauthorized content

You must use the Service only for personal learning and not for commercial redistribution or resale.

 

7. Intellectual Property

All content, designs, text, graphics, lessons, audio, images, code, and other materials within the Service are owned by Bara tala or its licensors. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works of the Service without our written permission.

 

8. Voice Input and Pronunciation Exercises

Some learning activities include speaking into the device microphone. Your voice is processed temporarily by our technology providers (e.g., Microsoft speech processing) solely to provide pronunciation feedback. We do not store voice recordings, and this process is explained in our Privacy Policy.

 

9. Third-Party Services

We may use third-party tools and SDKs to provide certain features (e.g., authentication, analytics, speech processing). Your use of those features may also be subject to their respective terms and policies. We are not responsible for third-party websites or services linked from within the app.

 

10. Availability and Updates

We may update or modify the Service at any time to improve functionality, fix issues, or add features. We may also temporarily limit access for maintenance or security reasons. You agree that we are not liable for interruptions to the Service.

 

11. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available." We do not guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free, that the content will meet your expectations, or that pronunciation or learning results will be accurate or achieve specific outcomes. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, whether express or implied.

 

12. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Bara tala is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages; loss of data, revenue, or business; or issues arising from your Organization's management of your access. Our total liability to any user is limited to the amount paid to us for that user's access (in most cases, zero, as the Organization pays).

 

13. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access:

  • At the request of your Organization
  • If you violate these Terms
  • If your Organization's subscription expires
  • To comply with legal requirements

Upon termination, your right to use the Service ends immediately.

 

14. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Iceland. Any disputes will be resolved exclusively by the District Court of Reykjavík.

 

15. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify users or Organizations as required by law. Continued use of the Service after updates means you accept the new Terms.
